Course Planning

This is great; I’m excited about using these different task types in our course. Can we start building?
Let's make sure our course plan is in place before we start building. Take a look at my brain to see how it will react.
We need to start with an overall course purpose. Our brains like organization.
Wow. My amygdala really liked that.
And then we need clearly defined learning outcomes that will help us accomplish the purpose. Small steps keep us from feeling overwhelmed.
Agreed. Look my corpus collossum really gets turned on when it’s not overwhelmed.
Then we can match task types to our learning outcomes and organize the sequence of tasks in folders.
Look at my brain! Engagement is way up!
Take a look- this is what we are after, right?
Yep. I think we're on to something.

Considering Options

Let's get started building then.
There is one more thing you need to consider before we begin: Each task can be set to require facilitation.
Does that mean someone must examine what the participant did in the task before it can be completed?
Exactly. Even though you can check the box to Require Facilitation on any task, you should understand when it is appropriate to do so. Look at this table below.

When to Require Facilitation

Task Type Require Facilitation? Notes
Generic Task Never The participant is only reading information and doesn't provide anything for you to check or approve.
Video Task When Necessary If you want to have them watch a portion of video, you may provide times in a Generic task before the video and then facilitate the task to ensure they watched the right length of time.
File Upload Task When Necessary If you want to examine the contents of what they uploaded, require facilitation on this task.
File Download Task Never You can use other tasks and require facilitation to ensure that the content from the download was examined. For example, you could use a Free Response or a Forum Post task. Or you could not require facilitation and use a Multiple Choice task.
Offsite Link Task Never You can use other tasks and require facilitation to ensure that the content on the external site was examined. For example, you could use a Free Response or a Forum Post task. Or you could not require facilitation and use a Multiple Choice task.
Forum Begin Task When Necessary If you want to see that the initial post of the thread was relevant, require facilitation.
Forum Post Task When Necessary If you want to see that the post was relevant to the desired outcome, require facilitation.
Multiple Choice Task Never Edivate can easily determine that a participant answered with the correct response.
Free Response Task Always You must determine whether the response was appropriate to the question, unless you truly don't care about the response.
